What’s Happening in the Preparedness Industry? An Update

By Denis Korn

This is the time to get serious about preparedness!

What’s happening in the Emergency Preparedness industry during these critical and uncertain times?

Availability and Lead Times

National and international events have stimulated many to take emergency preparedness seriously. This has created a significant demand for certain preparedness products such as long term shelf stable foods, emergency radios and water purifiers and filters. Lead times for some of these items are running from a few weeks to a few months.

For example, AlpineAire Foods’ Gourmet Reserves products are currently at 6 to 8 weeks. With Oregon Freeze-Dried Foods (Mountain House) dramatically reducing canned foods output and virtually eliminating all their dealers, AlpineAire has been picking up much of the demand (it always has been a better product and value anyway).

Eton emergency radios are at 4 to 8 weeks depending on when within their manufacturing cycle you order.

Some Berkey stainless steel purifiers can have as much as a 3 month wait. The Berkey Lights fortunately are in stock, as is Katadyn filters.

If you have been sitting on the fence wondering when to prepare, I suggest you act as soon as possible. I have been in this industry for 36 years and my sense of things is that another major event may motivate a vast number of folks to finally stock up creating overwhelming demand with only a limited supply. There are numerous scenarios of concern on the minds of many – any one of which can trigger a massive response. NOTE: I will be sending out more frequent newsletters to keep you updated during these unique times. Tell your friends about us.

New Preparedness Food Companies

If you are considering purchasing long term food reserves I highly recommend reading my post Deception or Trust? – Buying Emergency Foods. The significant increase in demand for emergency food products has unfortunately spawned a new crop of questionable food companies with deceptive claims.

Availability of Basic Commodities & Raw Materials

At this time commodities (beans, grains, etc.) are available and raw materials for freeze-drying and dehydrating are also obtainable. However, global weather patterns including droughts and flooding, along with political manipulation, are affecting the availability of basic foods in many parts of the globe. In the United States we have not only weather issues to influence crop production, but also the increasing costs of transportation and inflation.

Every knowledgeable source is predicting a substantial increase in the cost of food and potential problems with availability. As I have written in my article Why Prepare?, we cannot always rely on others to provide essentials any time we think we may need them.
